The Farm!

Well, if you are one of the 12551 hitters of this blog (no idea HOW that happened!!!!), you will know that I have been building a nice little render farm.

Three key things happened to facilitate this, all reliant on the kindness of friends and strangers!

  • DNEG, my old employer kindly gave me 8 render blades and three Dell 670 workstations! This was a fantastic gesture and after realising that a new install was required on all the nodes (They were all still looking for “Zinc”, the main server at DNEG) the rest of the set up was a doddle… www.dneg.com
  • James Gratton & Gary Hartfrom BitSub.com upon hearing that I had all this hardware kindly offered some I.T support throughout production. A Gigaswitch, Cat 6 cables and kettle leads were promptly dispatched and form the center of the hardware install. So impressed am I with BitSub that it looks like PC world and Comet can look elsewhere for my custom, as Bitsub have everything you could possibly need for a venture as small as PP and beyond!!! Here’s to the start of a very productive relationship. www.bitsub.com

  • Holger Schönberger and his Royal Render is a fantastic addition to the list of supporters, because his Royal Render application is going to be the fire in the belly of the farm! Ggggrrrrrrr, just look what this puppy can do!!!! It just seems to be able to handle any job you throw at it, and to be honest, I need something so rock solid and stable and it looks like Royal Render have stepped up to the line and joined the team…. Im so looking forward to seeing all those nodes chucking out frames. The electricity bill though is something that I cant say I will be too happy to see! www.royalrender.de

So a massive thanks to everyone that has helped me get the farm up and running!!!!!

Building the render farm!

Not much to report this week in terms of developments… Im busy building the render farm so that next month I can start knocking out tests and look dev at a faster pace.

the render farm consists of

8 Dual Xeon render blades, each with 4 GB of Ram

4 Dell 650s, again, dual Xeons and 4 GB of ram

Im also looking at getting a NAS to use for JOBS storage and the all important Giga Switch

Pretty impressive stuff……. for free!

The 8 Blades will be taking all of the Mental Ray jobs (as my Unlimited allows for upto 8 Nodes.

One 650 in the office for the 3d, two in the rack for Number crunching, and one upstairs for those quiet evenings when I just fancy a bit of a change. It wont be a main unit, so will probably have a family account on it as well for the kids and my wife.

Im just hoping that all the DHCP and MAC adress mapping I am doing this weekend will work when I start putting it all together…..

Also received a couple of new reference pieces.

A couple of sea wolf Submarines for the first part of the flashback. I only really need to the one, for scanning, the other goes into the collection as well as being used for look dev ref.

Due to its symmetrical nature, I may take the scanning one, break it in half, spray paint it matt white and Scan it. The spray paint is not essential, but the sub is made of a really hard shiny plastic, so needs a little treatment anyway.

I also received a Plane today as well. Im not sure it will make it into PP, but its a nice addition anyway.
